Parent University 2012: Becoming an Effective Advocate and Change Agent
Parent University is a collaboration of Dr. Julie Causton-Theoharis & Thomas Bull of Syracuse University's School of Education and Lisa Finnerty-Coggi & Kristine O’Brien of the Syracuse University Parent Advocacy Center. Parent University is taught by an array of national and local presenters.
Navigating the special education system as a parent can be confusing and frustrating. The focus of this series is to raise the capacity of parents to advocate for their children to be meaningfully educated within the context of general education classes. Parents will learn to develop skills to become effective advocates for their child and others. This series will also provide an opportunity for networking and developing advocacy teams to become effective change agents. These sessions are also designed to empower parents to advocate for their rights collectively and to learn about the potential for success of children in inclusive settings. Our goal is to share specific strategies for working collaboratively with a school team to make inclusive education a reality for children.
