What is it?
Navigating the special education system as a parent can be confusing and frustrating. The focus of this six part series is to raise the capacity of parents to advocate for their children to be meaningfully educated within the context of general education classes. These sessions are designed to empower parents to advocate for their legal rights collectively and to learn about the potential for success of children in inclusive settings. Our goal is to share specific strategies for working collaboratively with a school team to make inclusive education a reality for your child. The strategies shared include how to:
- articulate your vision,
- work with your child's educational team,
- know the law,
- plan for the IEP
- write inclusion oriented goals,
- ensuring the success of your child's inclusion and
- responding to resistance from school personnel
We will finish this series by having you participate in a planning process that will help shape the goals and dreams of your child's future, and you will leave with a written personal plan.
