THE AUTISM SERIES
Autism is currently the fastest growing developmental disability in the country. It is important for parents and professionals to understand autism and learn best practices for educating children with autism in our schools and communities. The possibilities are endless for our children!
With an introduction to the series by Jamie and Sheree Burke
Session 1: Supporting Learning and Communication through iPad Technology
Presented by Christy Ashby, Ph.D., Syracuse University
This interactive session will focus on the use of iPad technology to support the communication and academic access of students with autism as well as other disabilities. We will discuss the benefits of this type of mobile technology and consider the basic functionality of the iPad. Much of the time will be devoted to exploring new and innovative apps that will support social and academic engagement. If you have an iPad, please bring it along. We will bring a few devices and accessories as well.
Session 2: In-Class Support of Students with Autism
Presented by Julie Causton-Theoharis, Ph.D. Syracuse University
This engaging presentation will focus on the utilization of paraprofessionals to support student learning and social interaction. We will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of one-on-one adult support. We will spend most of the time learning about the most effective ways to support students in the context of general education. We encourage you to invite your child's Paraprofessional, 1:1, Teacher or Teachers Assistant to attend this session with you so that you can work collaboratively for your child.
All families are welcome, not just those affected by autism.
Vendors and other informational resources will be made available.
